Streichsbier: Relieved and optmistic

Relief was the overriding emotion in the Germany U19 camp after yesterday’s 3-0 victory over Austria. The result means that they will contest a play-off, with the winner heading to the U20 World Cup next summer in South Korea. After losing their first two games, it was great to see the goals flowing again. In short, everyone was delighted with how things went on Sunday.

Their play-off opponents will be announced later today after Group B concludes. The tabular situation in that group, coupled with head-to-head records and today’s fixtures (Netherlands vs. France, England vs. Croatia), means that Germany will either face France or the Netherlands. If today’s game provides a winner, the loser will face the DFB-Team. If it ends level, France will finish third by virtue of scoring fewer goals.

Streichsbier: "World Cup qualification is the aim"

Head coach Guido Streichsbier isn’t getting ahead of himself, but wants his side to achieve their minimum target – reaching next summer’s tournament. “We will prepare for the game just like we did for the Austria one. We came out on top then, thankfully. The players reacted well to the pressure they were under, which is a good sign for the future. They need to take the experience from this match into Thursday’s one.”

He made five changes for the game and they seemed to pay off, with Amar Condé, Jannes-Kilian Horn and Cedric Teuchert catching the eye. “The strategy I implemented meant that changes were necessary,” explained Streichsbier. “Decisions regarding whether that system would have worked in the first two games are redundant in my opinion.”

The players now have three days to rest ahead of Thursday’s game (19:00 CEST). Regeneration activity and training sessions are planned, in order to ensure that everyone is ready for the crunch clash.
