Streichsbier optimistic ahead of second clash with South Korea

Second game, second win? On Tuesday afternoon (12:00 CET), Germany U19s take on South Korea for the second time in four days. After a 2-1 win in Ingelheim, Guido Streichsbier is looking forward to the next encounter in Worms. "If we can do something about our timidness in defence and attack as well as we did two days ago, then I’m sure we will take another important step in our development," commented the 46-year-old.

What did Streichsbier not like from a defensive perspective? "We weren’t dominant enough in shutting down their attacks," explained the coach. "We weren’t compact enough. South Korea made use of this to make it 1-0, and then had the chance to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards."

Streichsbier: "From the 20th minute onwards, we played as we had intended"

The head coach was even more pleased with the reaction his team showed after having fallen behind. "From the 20th minute onwards, we played as we had intended." The fact that they went on to win the match is promising looking ahead to the U19 European Championships: "It gives the team confidence. We can remember this experience in difficult times, and it will give us belief that we can turn games around."

This initial defensive instability was in part due to South Korea’s attacking tactic, he went on to explain: "They attacked so early on, much earlier than we were anticipating," said Streichsbier, who was impressed with what he saw from them: "The Koreans will want to made a good impression. They are using these games as preparation for the U20 World Cup, which is due to take place in South Korea next year."

Focus shifted to the second match on Monday morning, and the team practiced quick counter attacks in training. "We have discussed a few things already, and put them into practice. I expect my team to show this in the game on Tuesday," said Streichsbier.
