Stocker and Schulz fire Hertha to 2-0 win over Paderborn

Hertha BSC had Valentin Stocker and Nico Schulz to thank as they took a huge step to securing their safety. Switzerland international Stocker scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute before substitute Schulz put the result beyond doubt with two minutes to go as Hertha ran out 2-0 winners. Berlin jump up to eleventh on 32 points thanks to the win.

The visitors continued to their slide down the Bundesliga table. Paderborn are without a win and a goal in six games and remain in second bottom. Patrick Ziegler picked up his fifth yellow card today and will miss their next game.

Hertha were the better side in the opening stages in front of 44,031 spectators. Fabian Lustenberger and Co. were hungry to win the ball back once they lost it. They were also able to create a few hopeful chances in their build-up play. The hosts were able to make the most of the space on the pitch through the use of the wings and diagonal balls. Berlin had almost 60% possession in the first half.

Both sides were unable to create chances for long periods. Peter Pekarik received the ball at the far post in the 35th minute but he was unable to find the back of the net. Just before half time, Stocker missed a chance to fire his side in front as he spun and shot.

The game didn’t change too much after half time. Paderborn became more courageous and got ever closer to the hosts’ goal, however Vrancic and Wemmer were unable to find the back of the net. Hertha didn’t panic in their search for a goal and kept the ball in order to find a way through their opponents’ defence. The hosts took the lead in the 65th minute from a set-piece. Paderborn goalkeeper turned Marvin Plattenhardt’s free kick onto the bar but Stocker was on hand to put home the rebound. Schulz then settled the game just before the final whistle.
