Stielike named South Korea head coach

Former Germany international Uli Stielike has been tasked with guiding Korea Republic to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, the South Korean association announced on Friday. The 59-year-old succeeds Hong Myung-Bo, who stepped down as national coach following his team’s group stage exit at the World Cup in Brazil. The German supremo, who holds the highest DFB coaching qualification, will in all likelihood watch South Korea’s friendly against Uruguay on Monday form the stands.

Stielike earned 42 caps for Germany and most recently coached at club level with Al-Sailiya in Doha. He was Germany assistant coach under boss Erich Ribbeck from 1998 to 2000 and went on to supervise a number of the DFB’s junior national teams. He was also head coach of Switzerland (1989 to 1991) and Côte d’Ivoire (2006 to 2008).

Stielike won the 1980 European championship as a Germany player. He spent his club career with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Real Madrid and Swiss side Xamax Neuchatel.
