Steffen Freund coaches Under 16 national team

Steffen Freund completes the coaching staff of the German Football Association (DFB) as he takes over the Under 16 national team. Freund (21 caps) played alongside DFB Sports Director Matthias Sammer during the 1996 European Championship triumph of the German team.

The 39-year old signed a two-year-contract at the DFB headquarters. DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach said: “We need to continue our successful approach regarding the juniors’ teams, and won’t tolerate any slack-off. Hiring Steffen Freund, a former European champion, underlines our determined effort for our juniors. Our expectations for this team are very high.”

“A sound education and schooling is the basis for any professional coach. In May, I completed my one year at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Academy in Cologne. It’s great that I can now start with the DFB Under 16-team”, said Steffen Freund. He will summon the squad for the first time on August 11.

One of the few German players to succeed in England, Steffen Freund enjoyed his most successful years in Dortmund, where he won the German championship in 1995 and 1996. In 1997, Borussia Dortmund celebrated their historic triumph in the Champions League. Freund played 117 Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund. He later signed with Tottenham Hotspur. Steffen Freund had started his Bundesliga-career with Schalke 04.
