Stefanie Sanders: "We have two very tough games ahead of us"

Steffi Sanders played a huge part in the U17 women’s successful opener to their European Championship campaign. The Werder Bremen striker scored two and set one up during the 5-0 win over Iceland, putting them in a good position ahead of the next two games against Spain and England. In an interview with DFB.de, Steffi Sanders discusses her performance against Iceland.

DFB.de: Stefanie Sanders, how much of a relief was it to win the first match at the EUROs?

Stefanie

Sanders: We’re obviously very happy that we started the tournament with a win. But we had set ourselves the goal to win the anyway. That we managed to do it with five goals, obviously makes it all the more pleasing!

DFB.de: The Icelandic team were extremely defensive. How difficult was it to score against that defence?

Sanders: We thought that it gave us more room to play, but it was therefore very important to get the ball into the box. Ultimately though, we are happy that we could win by such a margin.

DFB.de: You made a big contribution to the game, scoring two goals. How important was your first goal to make it 2-0 just before the break?

Sanders: It was obviously very important to extend the lead in the first half. It allowed the whole team to go into the second half more relaxed.

DFB.de: How will the performance against Iceland compare to other matches in the tournament?

DFB.de: How will the performance against Iceland compare to other matches in the tournament?

Sanders: It’s difficult to say. You could argue that we were very dominant against Iceland. Spain and England will be different and won’t allow us to have as much possession. We have two very tough games ahead us.

DFB.de: How would you assess your chances for these two games?

Sanders: If we perform like we know we can as a team, then we have a very good chance of getting good results against these teams.

DFB.de: How will the team prepare for the upcoming game?

Sanders: This morning we can recover. On top of that we have some lessons with two teachers so that we can keep on top of our school work, and then this evening we will have a training session on the pitch.
