Stats and facts: Germany’s 2015 in numbers

There are 14,792km between Australia and the Netherlands. For the DFB-Team, there are a mere 323km between Australia and the Netherlands - and 237 days. The match against Australia on 25th March 2015 kicks off the year following Germany’s fourth World Cup win, and the game on 17th November 2015 in Hannover against the Netherlands will complete it. Germany will face eight different opponents in the coming 12 months and they have a total of nine matches on their fixture list. With a look ahead to the Germany national team’s matches in 2015, DFB.de has assembled both meaningful and less useful stats and facts.

Record

Up until now, Germany have played a total of 115 matches against Australia, Georgia, USA, Gibraltar, Poland, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands. The DFB-Team have won more than half of those games, namely 60. There have been 31 draws and 24 defeats.

World rankings

The World Champions are top of the world rankings. The Netherlands are currently in fifth place. If you add all of the opponents’ rankings up, the eight sides would be in 400th place. The calculation is firstly not very meaningful and secondly incorrect. The results are distorted, as Gibraltar are not listed in the FIFA world rankings. Nevertheless, Germany will be playing, on average, a team 57th in the world rankings during the year 2015.

The most games

In 2015, the World Champions will be playing against no side as often as Georgia - twice. In Germany’s history, 2015 opponents the Netherlands are the team that they have played against the most. In 40 meetings with their neighbours, there have been 15 wins, 15 draws and ten defeats for Germany. The DFB-Team have only played against Gibraltar once, and won, and also haven't played against Georgia or Australia very often. They have won all three of their encounters with Georgia, while they have won three out of their four meetings with Australia, losing once.

The most goals

The match with the most goals, that was a long time ago: On 24th March 1912, Germany played against the Netherlands and the game finished 5-5 with Julius Hirsch getting four of the goals. On the 5th April 1914, two fewer goals were scored in a 4-4 draw. It is astoundingly rare for there not to be many goals scored. Only on five occasions has there been a 0-0 draw in the 115 matches against Australia, Georgia, USA, Gibraltar, Poland, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Highest win

Again it's the Netherlands. 7-0 was the result of that record win from 21st Ocotber 1959. Albert Brülls scored the opening goal in Cologne. Aki Schmidt (2) and Uwe Seeler (3) scored the next five goals between them and Gerhard Siedl got a late one in the 89th minute.

The biggest stadium

The match between Germany and Georgia in Tiflis will have the largest capacity for spectators. The Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena holds 55,000 people. Glasgow’s Hampden Park (52,063) follows in second place. If all nine matches were to sell out, nearly half a million people would be able to see the World Champions perform. The nine stadia fit 427,922 spectators altogether.

The record champions

The record champions in Germany? What a silly question - Wasserfreunde Spandau 04, of course. They have won the Water Polo Bundesliga 33 times. Oh wait, in football? Obviously, that would be Bayern München with their 24 championships. Internationally though, it's a rather mediocre haul. Rangers have won the Scottish league title 54 times and Ajax are 32-time Dutch champions. Germany's other opponents also have their record champions - Australia: Marconi Fairfield, Sydney City Hakoah, South Melbourne FC (4 each); Georgia: Dinamo Tiflis (14); USA: Fall River Marksmen (7); Gibraltar: Prince of Wales FC, Lincoln Red Imps FC (19); Poland: Ruch Chorzów, Górnik Zabrze (14); Ireland Shamrock Rovers (17).

The coaches

Joachim Löw has been coaching the Germany national team for eight years, a tenure that is unmatched among his opponents in 2015. The man who has otherwise been in charge the longest is Allen Bula, who began his spell at Gibraltar in November 2010. Jürgen Klinsmann started coaching the USA in July 2011, while Poland manager Adam Nawalke started his job in October 2013, much like his Australian counterpart Ange Postecoglou. Guus Hiddink has been the Netherlands’ coach since August 2014, and the most recently appointed national coach is Kakhaber Tskhadadze, who started working with Georgia on 26th December 2014.
