Stars of the future looking to impress

A number of excellent players have represented the Germany U19 side in recent years. In 2014 Joshua Kimmich, Marc Stendera, Julian Brandt and Davie Selke guided them to European Championship success in Hungary. 12 months later Jonathan Tah, Leroy Sané and Timo Werner featured as they left the competition at the end of the group stage. All of these players have gone on to play in the Bundesliga, with Tah, Sané and Kimmich heading to France for this year’s European Championship. As a result of this, the upcoming U19 EUROs, which take place in Germany, promise to be a great opportunity for the players involved.

Qualification: Germany, as hosts, reached the tournament automatically. Whilst the remaining teams attempted to qualify in March, they played two friendlies against South Korea. The DFB-Team won both matches 2-1, 1-0). Additionally, a training camp was held recently in order to prepare the players. “We worked hard for eight days in order to make sure everyone is ready for the Italy match,” explained head coach Guido Streichsbier.

The boss: Guido Streichsbier’s coaching career began in 2002 when he took charge of the Astoria Walldorf U19s in 2002. Since then he’s occupied the same role at Hoffenheim, as well as overseeing the 1. FC Kaiserslautern U17s and WAlldorf first team squad. In 2014 he linked up with the DFB, originally managing the U18s before also taking charge of the U19s in March 2016. The tournament is taking part in his home region, which “gives me even more desire to succeed,” he added.

The players: “We don’t have any real stars – the standard is high across the board,” remarked Guido Streichsbier. Despite this assessment, skipper Benedikt Gimber (SV Sandhausen) as well as Benjamin Henrichs (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Suat Serdar (Mainz 05) and Philipp Ochs (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), all of whom have played in the Bundesliga, spring to mind.

The opponents: Germany get their campaign under way on Monday (12:00 CEST) against Italy in Stuttgart, before facing Portugal in Großaspach on 14th July (19:30 CEST). The final group game takes place three days later against Austria in Reutlingen.
