St. Pauli miss-out on top spot – Union beat Duisburg

Newly promoted MSV Duisburg remain rock bottom of the 2. Bundesliga and are still without a victory this season. On matchday 9 they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Union Berlin. Saturday's other game in Germany's second division ended in a stalemate between relegated SC Paderborn and high-flying FC St. Pauli.

Union took the lead through Bobby Wood just four minutes in and controlled the game in the first half. Sören Brandy and Damir Kreilach added a goal each before the break. New signing Victor Obinna then bagged Duisburg's first away goal of the season and Kingsley Onuegbu scored late to give the visitors a chance of a comeback after Christopher Trimmel had missed a penalty midway through the second half. In the end, Union managed to defend their narrow lead and record their second victory in four games since Sascha Lewandowski was appointed as manager. Duisburg on the other hand are still the bottom side in the 2. Bundesliga following their fourth consecutive defeat.

St. Pauli rue missed chances

Hamburg-based side FC St. Pauli have impressed so far this season with solid performances and currently sit at second place in the table – level on points with table toppers Bochum, despite being held to a 0-0 draw away at SC Paderborn. The visitors had more of the game but squandered a handful of chances and SCP were kept in the game by keeper Lukas Kruse. Paderborn's Srdan Lakic was shown a straight red shortly before full time, as the Bundesliga relegated side continues to struggle in their return to the second division.
