Spoils shared in Hamburg

HSV and Köln played out a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon in the Bundesliga. The result ended Hamburg’s run of three consecutive defeats, but they’re still within touching distance of the relegation zone. They currently find themselves four points clear of the play-off spot. The Billy Goats, on the other hand, climbed above Ingolstadt and are now ninth in the table.

Simon Zoller gave the visitors the lead shortly before the break. He capitalised on an error from HSV skipper Johan Djourou before slotting home. The equaliser, scored by Nicolai Müller, came just two minutes into the second period.

Hamburger SV failed to create any real chances before the break. Having scored just 21 goals in 19 games ahead of this weekend, winter signing Josip Drmic was handed his debut, however, he was unable to spark them into life in an attacking sense.

Köln hit the front but HSV fight back

The first chance of the game well to Köln but Anthony Modeste’s fifth minute effort lacked conviction. The hosts attempted to exploit gaps in the visiting backline but despite the best efforts of Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Drmic, they were unable to create any opportunities in the opening exchanges.

Köln were intent to soak up possession before hitting their opponents on the counter. This had some success as Mladenovic and Anthony Modeste both had good opportunities to score before Zoller converted with just four minutes left of the half.

Lasogga was replaced by Rudnevs at the break and this sparked HSV into life as they immediately equalised and then went on to hunt a winner. Their first chance to go in front came courtesy of Gojko Kacar’s piledriver but Timo Horn was able to keep it out (50’). The visitors remained a threat on the break throughout but were unable to convert again and consequently the game ended level.
