Sorg: "Having a 33-strong squad makes sense"

The Germany U19s will be training intensively in the next few days, as this is the last time he will have his team in one place at one time at the Four Nations Tournament. This is one of the most important checkpoints on the way to the European Championships for the U19s and Marcus Sorg wants to get to know his team better and implement his playing style on them. There are 33 players in his squad, and it would have been 34 had goalkeeper Dominik Reimann of Dortmund not got injured. The Germany youth team will face three tests in the form of Sweden, Serbia and France, beginning with the former tonight at 18:00 CET.

DFB.de: You’re going into the tournament with 33 players. Why you decide on such a big squad?

Marcus Sorg: We chose this squad size because it made sense. There are a lot of players who can get experience playing in a national team and it gives us a chance to get to know more players better. The players should know that they all have a real chance of playing in the European Championships next summer in their own country.

DFB.de: With so many players there must be a structure to everything you do?

Marcus Sorg: We train together on the pitch, but then also in smaller different groups. With such a big group it’s easier to implement a playing style on them without stress.

DFB.de: Is anything planned is this respect?

Marcus Sorg: Players that are in the starting eleven will have controlled training sessions while the other 22 have a more intensive session. In this way, we ensure that everyone is adequately prepared.

DFB.de: What are you working on with the team?

DFB.de: What are you working on with the team?

Marcus Sorg: The Elite Cup brought up many things which we have analysed and now want to make better and organise more. The main topics were defending and creating goalscoring opportunities. The boys are motivated, so it’s important that we use this time well.

DFB.de: The U19s will face Sweden in the first game. What do you expect from your team?

Marcus Sorg: We must attack. It must be evident that we are the home team and we have to go in with confidence. It depends also on what we have worked on in training. I’m confident that we can move forward as a team during this competition.
