Smiles all round at BVB: Gündogan makes comeback - Reus also features

Germany international Ilkay Gündogan has made his long overdue comeback following a 422-day absence due to a back injury. The 23-year-old played for last season’s Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund’s U23 side, as they took on local neighbours and Regionalliga side VfL Bochum. The fixture took place at the BVB training ground behind closed doors. Gündogan should be in the Dortmund squad in their next away match against 1. FC Köln on October 18th.

Gündogan’s last appearance came against Paraguay in an international friendly (3-3) on 14th August 2013. He then underwent an operation in June following unsuccessful conservative treatment on a nerve inflammation in his lumbar vertebrae.

Germany international Marco Reus also made his comeback in the same friendly on Friday, after recovering from his anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his ankle, which he sustained in the 2-1 win against Scotland in EURO 2016 qualifying on 7th September. The 25-year-old should be back in Dortmund’s starting XI soon if all goes to plan.
