Six successes and two failures for Bayern after 1-0 defeats in first legs

In European cup competitions, FC Bayern München have gone into the second leg of a knock-out tie with a 1-0 deficit on eight occasions during their long history. On six of those occasions, the German record champions have progressed to the next round. That is a good omen for Tuesday (20:45 CEST) when Pep Guardiola’s side attempt to turn around their tie against Atletico Madrid following their 1-0 loss in Madrid last week.

Last season, Bayern actually overcame a two-goal deficit (3-1) as they progressed against Porto with a 6-1 victory in the second leg. But the last time they found themselves a goal behind after the first leg, they suffered a 4-0 semi-final defeat in the Allianz Arena to Real Madrid in 2014. In Bayern’s history of European competition (Champions League, European Cup, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup), they have gone into a second leg behind on aggregate 28 times, progressing on 16 occasions.

And FCB’s strong home form also bodes well for them: They have won their last eleven matches at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League by an aggregate scoreline of 41-6. Hopefully some encouragement for the semi-final second leg against the defensively strong Atletico Madrid.
