Simic: “It was a dream come true”

DFB.de: You were recently called up to the national team for the first time and straight away made your first two appearances. Was it a dream come true?

Simic: Not just one, but several dreams came true. I hadn’t anticipated it at all. I am 27 years old, which is not usually the age when you get your first cap. That makes me all the more happy about it.

DFB.de: How did you find the days you spent with the national team?

Simic: It was extremely exciting and emotional. I can hardly put it into words. It was always my aim to make it into the national team and I did it for the first time. It is something I absolutely do not take for granted. I have now been invited again for the match against Norway. I am really excited for that. When Steffi Jones’ number pops up, it sends shivers up and down my spine.

Julia Simic’s dream has recently come true after being given her first two appearances in the German national team. And the 27-year-old has been called up once again for her side’s duel with Norway on 29th November. “When Steffi Jones’ number pops up, it sends shivers up and down my spine,” says Simic in an interview with DFB.de. The national team head coach can call “anytime”, according to the Wolfsburg woman.

However the midfielder must first focus on the upcoming tests with her club. They face Swedish side Eskilstuna IF today in the Champions League round of 16. Wolfsburg have a great chance of making it through to the quarter-finals after a 5-1 first-leg victory.

DFB.de: Ms Simic, was it that you were really strong in the 5-1 first-leg win or was the opposition weak?

Simic: I’d say it was a mixture of both. It was a good day for us and to be honest, I had thought that Eskilstuna would be stronger than they were. But that just shows that the Champions League is full of surprises. You never know exactly what is coming, even if you have the best possible preparation.

DFB.de: Wolfsburg always used to make the semi-finals at the very least in the Champions League. Can you do it again?

Simic: “We’ve certainly taken the first steps towards it and we want to build on that. Our biggest goal is to get to that stage of the competition. It’s not been straightforward. We had to get past Chelsea in the first round and we’ve certainly played easier teams than them. But we are happy to take on these challenges. That is exactly what the Champions League is all about, it’s the big-time.

DFB.de: How do you assess the current situation at VfL Wolfsburg?

Simic: Unfortunately we are a bit behind particularly after our home defeat against Turbine Potsdam. That was unnecessary, but I don’t see it as anything dramatic. Ultimately we have been putting in solid performances up until now. If we don’t have don’t allow ourselves to lose our form, then we will challenge for the title right until the end. That I’m convinced of.
