Seven players in line for potential debuts

Joachim Löw’s 20-man Germany squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Denmark in Brondby (20:45 CEST) contains seven players who would be making their senior international debuts should the head coach call upon their services. DFB.de has a look at all those who could be making their international bows.

Kevin Trapp: The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has come into the squad in place of injured captain Manuel Neuer, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno and FC Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen being the other two goalkeepers. On the call-up, Löw noted that Trapp “has Champions League experience and has been in squads before. We trust him.”

Marvin Plattenhardt: The Hertha BSC free kick specialist has had an impressive campaign in the left back position, yet still, his call-up came as something of a surprise. “Yannick Gerhardt was the other option for left back, but he is playing with the U21s,” said Löw in discussing 25-year old Plattenhardt’s introduction to the team.

Diego Demme: Along with Plattenhardt, probably the biggest surprise call-up in Löw’s side. His performances in defensive midfield he has shone throughout the season at high-flying RB Leipzig. “He is like a mini-Gattuso. He covers energy very well and is always committed in the tackle. He is a very useful to have when you do not have the ball,” said Löw.

Kerem Demirbay: Another who has enjoyed an excellent season, starring in 1899 Hoffenheim’s top four-finishing side. Löw has high hopes for the 23-year old, and picked out his “ability in making the final pass and very good technique” as his standout qualities.

Lars Stindl: The 28-year old Borussia Mönchengladbach attacking midfielder has proved himself to be a danger in front of goal and is coming off a strong season. Löw stated that Stindl’s playing style “fits with our philosophy of technical football and way of playing. He is a leader in personality.”

Amin Younes: Formerly of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Younes stood out in Ajax Amsterdam’s run to the Europa League final. With his pace and dribbling ability, the 23-year old is a tough prospect for opposition teams to handle, and Löw specifically picked out his “great gift in one-on-one duels,” in praising the 23-year old with regard to his call-up. He added “our team thrives on quick combination play, and he is a player who can add an element of surprise.”

Sandro Wagner: Like Demirbay, he has had a big role in Hoffenheim’s rise to European football, and is in the national squad for the first time. He is known as a direct and outspoken character, with Löw describing him as “honest and direct,” seeing the 29-year old who can give the German attack a different edge.
