Serie A title in reach for Khedira and Juventus

Sami Khedira and Juventus have almost reached their aim after months of hard work. The World Champion and his side won 2-1 on Serie A matchday 30 against Fiorientina and increased their lead over second-placed Napoli to 12 points, a lead that can really only be overturned theoretically. Napoli will face Roma on Monday (15:00 CEST) and can narrow the gap with a win.

Substitute Alvaro Morata fired Juventus to within reach of their fifth consecutive Scudetto in the 83rd minute. Former Bundesliga regular, Mario Mandzukic, had opened the scoring in the 39th but his goal was cancelled out by Nikola Kalinic in the 80th minute. It was a nervy finish for Juve as Cuadrado was at fault for giving away a penalty. Kalinic stepped up to take it but couldn’t beat Italy international Gianluigi Buffon in the Juve goal. Kalinic wasn’t done though and managed to hit the crossbar in added time at the end of the game.

Sami Khedira will have picked up league winners medals from three different countries if Juventus claim the title. In 2007, he won the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart before adding the Spanish title in 2012. He made his 20th appearance of the campaign on Sunday and has been a fixture in Massimiliano Allegri’s side since the beginning of the season.

Podolski at the double for Galatasaray

World Champion Lukas Podolski and Galatasaray ended their winless run in Turkey’s Süper Lig on Sunday. The Germany international netted two goals – taking his tally to twelve for the season - in Galatasaray’s 4-1 victory over Kasimpasa SK on matchday 30, ending a run of seven games without a victory.

Bilal Kisa had opened the scoring after 13 minutes, before Oscar Scarione equalised for the visitors in the 29th minute. Podolski, who had come close in the first half when his shot struck the post, bagged his first goal midway through the second 45, before Selçuk Inan doubled the hosts’ lead. Podolski added a fourth goal in stoppage time to secure Galatasaray’s eleventh win of the season.

Özil and Mertesacker record stalemate with Arsenal

World Champions Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker dropped points in the race for the Premier League title, as they were held to a 0-0 draw at relegation candidates Sunderland.

With three games left to play Arsenal are currently on 64 points and just one behind third-placed Manchester City. The Citizens recorded a 4-0 victory over Stoke City on Saturday.

Lazio suffer defeat without Klose

Lazio were without World Champion Miroslav Klose on matchday 35 in Italy’s Serie A as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Sampdoria. Filip Djordjevic bagged the lead for the visitors after just three minutes, but Fernando levelled the score in the 20th minute before Modibo Diakite grabbed the winner in the second half.

Mustafi and Valencia pick up a point in Getafe

Valencia’s winning streak in La Liga has been broken. Along with World Champion Shkrodran Mustafi, Valencia recorded a 2-2 draw against Getafe on matchday 35 and tightened their grip on 8th place in the table.

Before the draw, Valencia had won three matches in a row, including a 2-1 victory over Barcelona. Getafe, who sit 19th with 32 points, are in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle. Daniel Parejo rescued a point for Valencia after they fell 2-1 behind after goals from Alvaro Medran and Stefan Scepovic.
