Serial winners Schalke celebrate another victory

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting missed a first-half penalty, but the Cameroon international went on to lead serial winners FC Schalke 04 to a 3-1 victory over SV Darmstadt 98. The Royal Blues are now unbeaten in their last twelve competitive games.

Schalke comeback after fast start by Darmstadt

Darmstadt did not make it easy for Schalke in front of 58,703 spectators in Gelsenkirchen. Marcel Heller opened the scoring for the visitors after six minutes. The 30-year-old rounded S04 keeper Ralf Fährmann after a fine solo-effort from Sandro Sirigu set-up the opener. Schalke looked stunned but levelled through Sead Kolasinac after 26 minutes.

Darmstadt were lucky not to concede again two minutes later as Choupo-Moting failed to beat Michael Esser from the spot. However Schalke continued to threaten and Choupo-Moting made up for his missed penalty by firing the home side into the lead with his third goal of the campaign on the hour mark. Alessandro Schöpf also hit the target in second-half stoppage time to secure the victory for the Royal Blues.

Ibisevic hits double before red card

Hertha’s goalscorer Vedad Ibisevic put his side back in the Champions League places after the Bosnian striker netted his seventh and eighth goals of the season to almost single-handedly give his side a 2-1 victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05. However Ibisevic was forced to leave the field after he picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 74th minute.

Berlin’s sixth home win in as many games put them back in the Bundesliga top three behind Bayern München and league-leaders RB Leipzig. Mainz debutant Aaron Seydel fired the Zerofivers into the lead in the 25th minute in front of the 37,852 spectators at the Olympic stadium. Hertha eventually started to dominate after several static minutes, but Ibisevic and Valentin Stocker still could not convert their first chances of the match.

Hertha make the most of the extra man

With the match picking up the pace, Hertha began to increase the pressure on the away side and were rewarded with the equaliser through Ibisevic in the 36th minute. The Hertha man could have put his team in front shortly before the break when he got on the end of a superb long ball but his header flew past the post and wide.

The tempo dropped once again at the start of the second half but it was not until Mainz went down to ten men that the hosts were able to break the deadlock, as Gbamin was shown a second yellow. Vladimir Darida marked his comeback after two months out with injury with an assist for Hertha’s second goal, scored once again by Ibisevic. Ibisevic later saw red for a second bookable offence but his brace was enough to earn Berlin the victory.
