Scoreless tie in German Olympic opener

The German women played Brazil to a scoreless tie in the opening game of the Olympic tournament. Both teams compete in a group with Nigeria and North Korea. The teams ranking first and second in the final group standings advance to the quarterfinal.

Forward Sandra Smisek hit the crossbar with a header in the 24th minute – the biggest chance for the reigning World Cup champions to clinch victory. The two teams had last met in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

"We are satisfied with the final score. And I thought we did well on the defensive side of the ball", said German coach Silvia Neid.

On Saturday, Germany face Nigeria (11 A.M., live on ARD) in the second match of the group stage.

Germany – Brazil, Shenyang, August 6, 2008

After a guarded and restrained beginning, the DFB team started to control the pace. A shot by Birgit Prinz, just voted by German media as "women player of the year" for the eigth time in a row, narrowly missed the goal (41.). Just before halftime, Renate Lingor's free kick also went wide.

Due to the great heat, both teams had to reduce the pace in the final twenty minutes of the match.
