Germany lead the standings with four points, while their opponent in the final game of the group stage, Japan, also has four points. Both teams will meet on Monday (2 P.M., live on ZDF). The defending champions Germany need at least a tie to ensure their participation in the round of 16.

Kerstin Garefrekes failed to score (82.), when England’s superior goalkeeper Rachel Brown cleared the ball with a footsave – it was Germany’s biggest scoring opportunity. In front of a respectable crowd of 27,730 fans, Germany soon found out, that England was not Argentina, who they had defeated 11-0 in the tournament opener. England relied on a solid defense, with the prolific Kelly Smith playing the role of the sole forward.
