Champions League holders Real Madrid beat a MLS all-star squad captained by Bastian Schweinsteiger on penalties. In Schweinsteiger’s adopted homeland of Chicago, Los Blancos won 5-3 on penalties after it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes in front of 61,000 fans.
Borja Mayoral put Madrid into the lead in the 59th minute before Dom Dwyer equalised in the 87th minute for the MLS All-Star XI.
In the following shootout, Luca Zidane – son of Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane – saved Dom Dwyer’s attempt. Kroos and Schweinsteiger both featured in the first half of the match before being substituted.
Next Tuesday, Real Madrid face Europa League winners Manchester United in the European Super Cup in Skopje, Macedonia in their first competitive game of the season. Following this fixture, Madrid take on arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on the 13th and 16th August, before La Liga gets underway on August 20th.
