Schweinsteiger’s Manchester United qualify

World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger and his Manchester United side progressed from their Champions League qualifier with ease to set up a potential meeting with former side Bayern München. United comfortably won 4-0 in Bruges in the return leg of their play-off and advance to the group stage, unlike last year.

Schweinsteiger was brought on at half time, as in the first leg, and set up the fourth goal for Ander Herrera. It is the eighth year in succession that the Germany international will compete in the Champions League.

A hat-trick for Wayne Rooney made United’s job in Bruges very easy, whilst Schweinsteiger, who is regaining his form, produced a wonderful pass to play in Herrera for the final goal. Chicharito missed a penalty late on for United.

CSKA Moscow are in the group stage for the third year in a row, overcoming a 2-1 deficit from the first leg against Sporting Lisbon to win 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. The Belarusian side BATE Borisov qualified for the fifth time in their history against Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade, with FK Astana from Kazakhstan qualifying for the first time ever after overcoming APOEL Nicosia. The first round of group stage matches will take place on the 15th and 16th September.
