Schweinsteiger: "The first half wasn't great"

DFB.de spoke to the protagonists after Die Mannschaft’s 7-0 victory over Gibraltar in Saturday’s European Championship qualifier.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: We created a lot of chances but failed to make the most of them before the break. The first half wasn’t great. My penalty wasn’t that good either. I shouldn’t have allowed that to happen. I’m glad that Thomas Müller is coming back as he takes the spot kicks. These things happen.

Joachim Löw: We weren’t happy with the first half because we weren’t taking our chances. After the break we pushed a bit more and made the most of them. Gibraltar had nothing to lose but we should really have scored three or four goals before the break. We need to pick up more points in the autumn in order to reach the tournament.

André Schürrle: You have to realise that Gibraltar put up a good fight and made things tough for us. We had chances before the interval to score a few more goals, which we managed after the break. We started the second half strongly.

Sami Khedira: Gibraltar attacked us earlier than they did in the previous meeting. We could have been 5-0 up at the interval. After the break we stepped it up and picked up a deserved result.

Ilkay Gündogan: It’s difficult to explain why we failed to click early on. We wanted to react well in the second half and I think we managed that.

Max Kruse: We knew that we would have to be at our best to win this game and make sure that we didn’t pick up injuries. We managed to get the three points and can now enjoy our holidays.

Patrick Herrmann: Playing against the USA was special for me. To play again today was incredible.
