Schweinsteiger reaches the summit as Podolski scores

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s Manchester United have taken top spot in the English Premier League. Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil won 5-2 with Arsenal. DFB.de looks across Europe at which of our Germany internationals were in action today.

England

Four days before their Champions League clash with VfL Wolfsburg, Manchester United have moved up to top spot in the English Premier League. World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger came on in the second half to help his team to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

With this win, the Red Devils overtook local rivals Manchester City, who play Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League on Wednesday (20:45 CEST) and lost 4-1 away to Tottenham Hotspur in the early kick-off.

Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil’s Arsenal won 5-2 away at Leicester City and replace the Foxes at fourth place. For Leicester, Robert Huth was in the starting XI. Liverpool, with Germany international Emre Can, got past Aston Villa with a 3-2 win.

Turkey

World Cup winner Lukas Podolski scored in the 11th minute to set record champions Galatasaray on their way to a 2-1 win over Gaziantepspor. On matchday 6 Galatasaray improved their position in the table at least for the time being to third place. Umut Bulut scored the 2-1 winner in the 56th minute.

Mario Gomez’s big highlights as a Turkish League player will start tomorrow as he will be playing his first derby for Besiktas against Fenerbahce on Sunday (18:00 CEST). Mario Gomez recently spoke to uefa.com about his ambitions. In this interview he said: "My aim for the season is to win the Super League. That’s a difficult taks, but it’s possible with the team we have"

Spain

Shkodran Mustafi bagged the winner. With his goal for Valencia against Granada on Friday evening, the World Cup winner almost singlehandedly secured the three points for his side. Marc-André ter Stegen and Toni Kroos are the two other Germany internationals in action for Spanish sides on Saturday. Barcelona and ter Stegen have experienced two consecutive matches ending 4-1, only with a different winner in each case. After the 4-1 home win against Levante last weekend, ter Stegen had to pick the ball out of his own net four times in the away game at Celta Vigo. It was a historic affair, being Barcelona's biggest La Liga defeat in over six years. Messi and Co. have a fair bit to put right today when they face UD Las Palmas.

Barcelona's arch rivals Real Madrid and Toni Kroos were the big winners from Barcelona's slip-up. Their 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao allowed them to climb to first place, and their clash today appears easy on paper. In the Bernabeu, they will face Malaga, who are one place off occupying the bottom spot in the table.

Sami Khedira is the sole representative for the World Champions in Italy. He is still awaiting his first appearance in the Serie A as he is currently sitting out injured, and without him, Juventus are lacking structure, power and points. After the 2-0 win against Genoa, they received their next setback, drawing 1-1 with Frosinone.

AS Roma are back to winning ways even though they are having to make do without Germany international Antonio Rüdiger. After three competitive games without a win, Roma won 5-1 on matchday 6 of the Serie A season against FC Carpi. Former Stuttgart player Rüdiger was out of the squad with a knee injury. For one night at least, Roma have gone up to third place in Serie A with eleven points. Inter Milan lead the way on 15 points, with Fiorentina in second with 12. Carpi sit at the foot of the table with just 2 points to their name.
