Schweinsteiger on his Man Utd debut: "I feel fit"

Bastian Schweinsteiger is very impressed by Manchester United. His new club are currently touring the USA and, on Saturday, they will face FC Barcelona at the Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. The national team captain, whose transfer from FC Bayern München was completed last week, made a second-half appearance for Louis van Gaal’s team in a friendly against Club America on Saturday morning. Speaking about his debut with the Red Devils, Schweinsteiger said he “felt quite sharp, especially in the first 30-35 minutes, it was good”, during an exclusive interview with the club’s website. 46,000 fans were at the CenturyLink stadium in Seattle to watch the game.

"He settled instantly into arm-waving mode, offering guidance to his new colleagues, in a display that hinted at how and why the 30-year-old can be a prime factor in elevating United into title contenders”, wrote the Guardian after his first outing for the club. Bastian Schweinsteiger himself was also satisfied with his performance against the Mexican side: “I don’t know if it was similar to the Premier League teams, I don’t think so, but it was a good test for us. We wanted to have control of the game, to stay compact and I think we did that well.”

Van Gaal: "I have a lot of confidence in him"

It took just five minutes for Morgan Schneiderlin to put Man Utd in front with a delightful header. “It was a very good header, he’s a very good player", said Schweinsteiger about the Frenchman, who recently signed for the Reds from Southampton FC. The ex-Bayern star also heaped praise on Memphis Depay: "He is an unbelievable talent and he has so much quality.” The 21-year-old, who was the top scorer in Holland with 22 goals for league winners PSV Einhoven, switched to the English record champions earlier in the summer.

Van Gaal also had a lot of praise for Schweinsteiger’s leadership qualities in Seattle: “"I'm not only looking to the qualities of the player but also how he is as a human being. I have a lot of confidence in him.” Manchester United’s final tour match in America is on the 29th July against Paris St. Germain. Should he stay fit, he could make his Premier League debut on the 8th August, when his new club face Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
