Schweinsteiger makes Manchester United debut

World-Cup-winning midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger celebrated a successful debut for his new club Manchester United early on Friday morning. The most-decorated English club in history secured a 1-0 friendly win in Seattle over Mexican side Club América. The 30-year-old was brought on for the second half and immediately occupied his natural role in the middle of midfield, just six days after announcing his departure from FC Bayern München. Fellow new signing Morgan Schneiderlin bagged the only goal of the game inside ten minutes.

Schweinsteiger was praised by team mate Chris Smalling after the match: "It's great to have him in front of the back four. The timing of his passes is fantastic," said the defender.

United manager Louis van Gaal was pleased with the performance of his team in what was the first friendly of pre-season. "We kept a clean sheet and played as a team. I'm satisfied with the win," said the former Bayern coach.

After victory against the Mexican side, three more friendlies await United during their tour of the US. Schweinsteiger and co. will take on San Jose Earthquakes (22nd July), Champions League winners FC Barcelona (25th July) and French champions Paris Saint Germain (30th July) in the next few days.
