Schweinsteiger loses to PSG, Khedira wins on Juve debut and Kroos wins shootout

Germany’s captain Bastian Schweinsteiger suffered defeat with England’s most successful club Manchester United at the end of their US tour. The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 in Chicago by French champions Paris St Germain, who include goalkeeper Kevin Trapp amongst their ranks.

Blaise Matuidi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the goals for PSG in front of a crowd of 61,351 at Soldier Field, home of NFL side Chicago Bears. Schweinsteiger played the first half for United after having missed the previous game through injury. Trapp played the full 90 minutes in goal and was convincing after his summer move from Eintracht Frankfurt to Paris.

“I’m very happy with the performance, even though we lost,” said Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal. “Last year we won everything on tour, but then lost the first game in the league. Now the sequence is a little different.”

Sami Khedira made his debut for Juventus against Polish side Lechia Gdansk, and it was a winning start for the World Cup winner. Juve won 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal from former Bundesliga player Mario Mandzukic after Paul Pogba had originally opened the scoring for Juve and Adam Buska equalised for the hosts. Khedira started the game but was substituted after 64 minutes.

Toni Kroos has won the International Champions Cup in China with Real Madrid. The match against AC Milan ended 0-0 but Real won 10-9 on penalties. Kroos was a half-time substitute and took the fifth penalty which he missed against Milan’s keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The ensuing panalties were all scored intil Donnarumma missed the eleventh penalty for the Italians against Kiko Casilla.

World Cup winner Miroslav Klose was part of the Lazio team which travelled to Mainz for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday. The Italian side lost 3-0 after goals for Yunus Malli, Jairo Sampeiro and Christian Clemens. Klose started the game but had little impact.

Stefan Kießling and Karim Bellarabi were both amongst the goals as Bayer Leverkusen won their first match in five this pre-season. Roger Schmidt’s Leverkusen beat Spanish side Levante 4-0 in Bergisch Gladbach thanks to goals from Kießling, Bellarabi, Calhanoglu and Boenisch. Levante played with ten men for over an hour after Juanfran was shown a red card after half an hour.
