Schweinsteiger: "I'm very happy to play for Manchester United"

World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger has officially been presented as a Manchester United player. “It’s a big honour. I’m very happy to be here and to play for Manchester United,” said 30-year-old Schweinsteiger in Seattle, where he is currently on a leg of the English record champions’ USA tour. “It’s a new step in my life. I can’t guarantee trophies but I can guarantee we’ll give it our best shot.”

Schweinsteiger could make his Man Utd debut on Friday evening in a friendly game against Mexican side Club America. Head coach Louis van Gaal, who presented Schweinsteiger together with other new signings Matteo Darmian and Morgan Schneiderlin, gave the utmost praise to the Die Mannschaft captain. “I not only look at his qualities as a player, but as a person too,” said the former Bayern head coach. “I have huge faith in him. I’m sure that he’ll do all he can to play as well here as he has in Munich.”

During his time at FC Bayern, the former Netherlands national team head coach played a key role in Schweinsteiger’s development on the pitch. It was van Gaal who moved the World Cup winner from the flanks in to central defensive midfield. Schweinsteiger matured into a world-class player in the anchorman role, winning the Champions League in 2013 and then the World Cup in 2014 as vice-captain and an ultimate leader on the pitch in the final against Argentina.
