Schweinsteiger and Manchester United on course for group stage

Bastian Schweinsteiger is now in with a great chance of competing in the Champions League for the eighth year running, this time with his new club Manchester United. The German World Cup winner was brought on at half time as his new club beat Club Brugge 3-1 on Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League playoff. The result means that United can even afford to be narrowly beaten in the second leg on 26th August and still qualify for the group stage.

Schweinsteiger (31), whose brother Tobias came to Old Trafford especially to see him play, made his third appearance for United. In each game he has come on as a substitute for Michael Carrick, but this time in time for the start of the second half, as opposed to after an hour, as was the case in the two league games. In the 8th minute of the game, Carrick was the culprit of an embarrassing own goal which gave Brugge an early 1-0 lead. Both first-half goals for United were eye-catching solo efforts from new Dutch signing Memphis Depay. Brugge’s Brandon Mechele was shown a red card after receiving a second yellow in the 80th minute, and Marouane Fellaini nodded home in the last minute of stoppage time for the all-important third goal to make it 3-1.
