Schult: "We only have ourselves to blame"

VfL Wolfsburg beat Paris St. Germain 2-1 in the Women’s Champions League yesterday but were eliminated from the competition, having lost the first leg 2-1. Despite cranking up the pressure late on, Ralf Kellerman’s side were unable to grab a third goal. After the game, goalkeeper Almuth Schult spoke to DFB.de about the game, the DFB Cup final and this year’s Allianz Frauen Bundesliga.

DFB.de: Ms. Schult, how disappointed are you to have left the competition?

Almuth Schult: Very. We played well but couldn’t quite score again. We had them on the ropes but didn’t make the most of the chances that fell our way. You could tell that the PSG players were nervous towards the end as we were putting them under a lot of pressure, but we didn’t make it count. We only have ourselves to blame.

DFB.de: Do you feel the tie was lost in the first leg?

Schult: I’d say so. We had a bad day and lost 2-0 in front of our own fans, which is tough to turn around. We still believed in ourselves and the second leg shows that if we had performed a little bit better at home; we possibly would have reached the final.

DFB.de: When did you begin to hope?

Schult: We always had faith but the quickfire double from Martina Müller and Zsanett Jakabfi with just under 20 minutes to go galvanised us. From that moment on we were camped in their half.

DFB.de: The focus now shifts to Friday’s DFB Cup final against Turbine Potsdam...

Schult: ...and we want to win that game for sure. Turbine haven’t played as many games as us this year, but that could actually work to our advantage. We’re going to do all we can to lift the trophy. We’ve been dreaming of winning the cup and we want to make it come true.

DFB.de: And after that it’s the final day showdown in the Allianz Frauen Bundesliga.

Schult: We travel to 1. FFC Frankfurt, who are third, and anything could happen still. If we win, we’re champions. If we don’t, things get hazier. If we draw, Bayern could win the league but we’d still be in the Champions League. A defeat would be catastrophic as we’d be running the risk of not playing in Europe next year. We’re not thinking about that yet though. We’ll be doing all we can to win both tournaments.
