Schult replaces Angerer in goal - "I have dreamt of this day"

There’s been a change of goalkeeper in the Germany women’s national team. Following Nadine Angerer’s recent retirement, Almuth Schult from VfL Wolfsburg has been named as the new number one for the Germany team. “I have dreamt of this day since I started playing football,” said the 24-year-old. “It makes me immensely proud, it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Schult will celebrate her debut during the European Championship qualifier on Friday (16:00 CEST) against Hungary in Halle. She recently caught up with DFB.de to discuss her new role, her relationship with manager Silvia Neid and her predecessor Nadine Angerer.

DFB.de: Miss Schult, how do you feel to be the national team’s new number one?

Almuth Schult: It makes me immensely proud, it’s a wonderful feeling. I have dreamt of this day since I started playing football. At the same time, it’s definitely not a reason to get complacent. On the contrary, now I want to justify my selection.

DFB.de: You were back-up to Nadine Angerer for a long time. How was that for you?

Schult: That was a very important time for me, because I could learn a hell of a lot from “Natze”, both as a player and as a person. I was able to take a lot into my own career.

DFB.de: Like what?

Schult: She has a very, very strong character and was without doubt a complete leader. She had a powerful presence within the team. She was without doubt a great goalkeeper on the pitch. What especially impressed me was the fact she was never affected by mistakes. She lived by the mantra of team spirit. When a goalkeeper is responsible for a goal conceded, the team are always capable of making up for it and scoring. You always have to get back up and keep moving forward.

DFB.de: You’re following in huge footsteps. How does that make you feel: nervous or excited?

Schult: Obviously excited. I know that the team will make it easy for me to come and take Nadine’s place. I have already played a few times when she was unavailable, so I’m not stepping into completely new territory. I’m itching to get out and play against Hungary in Halle.

DFB.de: A special occasion for you?

Schult: Yes, of course. And for multiple reasons. The most important reason is obviously because I am now the number one in the national team. And even better that I can celebrate my debut in Halle. I have a lot of friends near there as I played at Magdeburger FFC for a while, which isn’t far from Halle. It was there that I made the first step into the international youth set-up. So it’s all coming full circle.
