Schürrle: "Things will improve sooner rather than later"

VfL Wolfsburg lost their second game of the season yesterday and currently sit in seventh place. DFB.de spoke to André Schürrle after the game about the match and the Wolves’ current situation.

Question: André Schürrle, you lost 2-0 in Gladbach yesterday. What are your thoughts on the game?

André Schürrle: It was quite an even game until they took the lead. We both had chances in the first half. We controlled the game for parts of the second half but they scored two goals in quick succession and it’s always hard to recover from that.

Question: You played up front yesterday. Dieter Hecking was impressed with your performance. How was it?

Schürrle: I felt at home. I enjoy playing down the middle. I had a few chances but also had the opportunity to drift out wide when necessary.

Question: What are your thoughts on the current situation at the club?

Schürrle: Small things aren’t quite going to plan – the final pass is lacking, our shooting isn’t quite to standard. You can’t win games without scoring, so obviously it’s tough.

Question: Tobias Sippel and yourself had a coming together in the box. What were your thoughts on the situation?

Schürrle: There was contact for sure but the referee didn’t feel that there was enough. I’ll admit that the way I went down looked a bit comical. As far as I’m concerned it was one of those penalties that sometimes get given but sometimes don’t.

Question: You had a good chance in the first half after dispossessing Granit Xhaka. What was missing?

Schürrle: The goal. It wasn’t an easy chance – I wanted to hit it hard and low into the back of the net but Sippel kept it out with his legs. We need to keep working hard in front of goal and then the chances will start to hit the back of the net again.

Question: There’s still a lot of the season to go, but things could be going better…

Schürrle: We’re aware of that but we don’t need to talk negatively about everything, because some things are going well. We played well in the opening 70 minutes of the Gladbach game – we saw a lot of the ball and created a couple of chances, however, we’re struggling to hit the back of the net at the minute. We have a good team though and I’m sure things will improve sooner rather than later.

Question: You link up with the Germany team this week. Are you looking forward to it?

Schürrle: It’s always great to represent your country. I would rather be heading off on international duty on the back of two wins but that’s football.
