Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer 04 Leverkusen recorded emphatic victories on Bundesliga matchday 27, underlining their ambitions to secure a Champions League spot. The Foals came back from a goal down to win 4-1 on the road against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Bayer 04 gave new Hamburger SV manager Peter Knäbel a rough welcome to the top flight with a 4-0 battering. VfL Wolfsburg also kept pace with a 3-1 victory against VfB Stuttgart, maintaining second place in the process.

Hannover 96 recovered from a two-goal deficit to hold Eintracht Frankfurt to a 2-2 draw but remain in the thick of the relegation battle. SC Freiburg beat Köln 1-0 at home and leap into 14th. The game between Werder Bremen and FSV Mainz 05 ended in a goalless draw.

Gladbach comeback in Sinsheim

Hoffenheim enjoyed a better start to the game and the hosts took the lead through Sven Schipplock after 17 minutes. The Foals then began to demonstrate why they are fighting for a Champions League spot this season. Max Kruse equalised from the penalty spot in the 26th minute and things escalated quickly soon after: Patrick Herrmann (31') and Raffael (36') finished off well executed attacks to put the visitors 3-1 up at halftime. Herrmann added a fourth six minutes after the restart.

Bayer Leverkusen ended any hopes Hamburger SV had to collect points in the BayArena fairly early on. Gonzalo Castro opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Stefan Kießling ended a 715-minute goal drought in the 44th minute and completed his brace eleven minutes after the break. Castro followed suit, scoring his second and Leverkusen's fourth of the game in the 63rd minute.

Schürrle celebrates first goal for Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg had problems against relegation candidate VfB Stuttgart for long spells but managed to pull ahead through Ricardo Rodriguez's 41st minute spot kick. Their lead didn’t last long; Martin Harnik levelled after 44 minutes. But the hosts continued to apply pressure in the second half and secured a deserved win thanks to a second goal from Rodriguez (65') and one from World Champion Andre Schürrle (76'), his first competitive goal for the Wolves.

Alexander Madlung (27') gave Frankfurt the lead and Stefan Aigner doubled their advantage shortly after the break (54') following a major blunder in Hannover's defence. Marcelo pulled one back after 68 minutes and Didier Ya Konan (82') curled a fantastic shot into the far corner to give Hannover a share of the points.

Freiburg secure vital home victory

Mike Frantz's goal in the 37th minute decided the contest between SC Freiburg and Köln. Köln remain in 12th place on 30 points; Freiburg jump into 14th with 28 points to their name.

No goals were scored in the Weserstadion between Werder Bremen and Mainz 05. A victory for SVW would have been their 500th home Bundesliga win.
