Schürrle on target during Dortmund’s 2-1 win in Bremen

Dortmund overcome ten-man Bremen

Borussia Dortmund have concluded the first half of the season with a victory. On matchday 17, Thomas Tuchel’s side won 2-1 at Werder Bremen thanks to a goal from Germany international André Schürrle. The visitors dominated the early stages of the game in the Weser Stadium. BVB coach Tuchel was forced to replace top goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and deployed Schürrle as the central striker. This paid off just five minutes into the game, when Schürrle bagged the opener for Dortmund.

Bremen eventually found their rhythm and forced Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller to make several decent saves before he was eventually beaten by Bartels on the hour mark, bringing Bremen level. At this point, the hosts had already been reduced to ten men after keeper Jaroslav Drobny had brought down Germany international Marco Reus outside of his area. With less than 20 minutes left to play, Dortmund retook the lead through Lukasz Piszczek as Bremen lost their first game in five.

Leipzig keep pressure on Bayern

RB Leipzig are off to the perfect start to the year with a 3-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 17 of the Bundesliga. They are now just three points behind current league leaders FC Bayern München.

Lukas Hradecky received a red card in the third minute of the game after handling the ball outside the box. Marvin Compper scored the opener in the 6th minute before Timo Werner added to Leipzig’s lead just before the half-time whistle. Frankfurt’s Jesus Vallejo put the ball into his own net in the 67th minute to make it 3-0 to Leipzig. Eintracht Frankfurt have now lost four games this season and slip to sixth in the table.

Bundesliga round-up

VfL Wolfsburg secured a 1-0 win at Hamburger SV with national team striker Mario Gomez providing the winner. The victory sees Wolfsburg climb the standings to take 12th place, while HSV remain in 16th place.

1899 Hoffenheim remain the only team in the league yet to suffer a defeat, as Julian Nagelsmann’s team managed a 2-0 victory at FC Augsburg. Sandro Wagner and Andrej Kramaric were on target for the visitors.

FC Schalke started 2017 with a 1-0 win at FC Ingolstadt. New signing Guido Burgstaller scored the late winner to keep Schalke in the race for the international qualifying places.

Both SV Darmstadt 98 and Borussia Mönchengladbach had new managers on the sidelines (Torsten Frings and Dieter Hecking) in a match that ended in a goalless draw.
