Schürrle and Chelsea remain top

World Cup winner André Schürrle ensured that Chelsea remain top of the Premier League in the final game of 2014. The Blues (46 pts) drew 1-1 to surprise package Southampton (33) on matchday 19 at the half-way point of the English top flight campaign. Arsenal move up to fifth with Per Mertesacker’s side’s 2-1 victory away to West Ham United.

Former Salzburg player Sadio Mane gave the hosts an early lead against the Blues, for which Schürrle started the game, but was subbed off at the break. The Londoners equalised through Eden Hazard on the stroke of half time, brother of Gladbach’s Thorgan, with their first shot on target. Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin picked up his second yellow shortly before the final whistle.

Arsenal win with World Champion Mertesacker

Arsenal struck a double blow to West Ham United just before the interval at Upton Park to pave the way for a win. Santi Cazorla (pen) and Danny Welbeck got the goals for the Gunners. Cheikhou Kouyaté sent Arsenal nerves jittering in the second half.

Mertesacker’s defence stood firm though and managed to secure victory. Lukas Podolski sat on the bench for the duration.
