Schubert called up for Nicolas

The Germany U19s have had another goalkeeping change ahead of their decisive fifth place play-off against the Netherlands (Thursday, 19:00 CEST). Moritz Nicolas who arrived on Sunday from Borussia Monchengladbach has had to be replaced due to illness, meaning Guido Streichsbier has called up Dynamo Dresnden’s Markus Schubert.

Nicolas had been called up late to the squad as well following a training injury to first-choice goalkeeper Dominik Reimann (Borussia Dortmund). Reimann was in goal for the first two matches of the European U19 Championship against Italy (0-1) and Portugal (3-4). Regular second choice Florian Müller (FSV Mainz 05) was between the posts for the 3-0 victory over Austria and is most likely to make another appearance for the crunch clash, which will decide who qualifies for the U20 World Cup in South Korea.

“It’s a shame that Moritz has had to withdraw after such a short period of time but the players’ health is a priority,” said Guido Streichsbier. “We would like to thank Dynamo Dresden and Markus Schubert for helping us out in a quick and uncomplicated fashion.”

Markus Schubert is in the same position as striker Janni Serra and defender Gökhan Gül, who were both brought up from the 1998 year group to play in the European U19 Championship despite being U18 internationals. The Germany U19s will play the Netherlands in the fifth place play-off on Thursday. The match will confirm who will participate at the U20 World Cup in South Korea.
