Schalke's Geis: "We are a real team"

DFB.de: Mr. Geis, you just completed your first Bundesliga game for Schalke 04 but your voice isn’t hoarse at all. Was there nothing to talk about on the pitch today?

Johannes Geis: That's right, my voice is pretty much intact. It was one of those games where I didn’t have to yell a lot.

DFB.de: Perhaps because your team secured a comfortable 3-0 victory in Bremen. Does the clear result indicate what's possible for Schalke this season – a place near the top of the standings?

Geis: It's not exactly normal to win by so much in Bremen because they’re a difficult side to beat. We played well but it wasn’t quite perfect yet. On the other hand it was only our first league game of the season. We have to continue to perform and then we can make a verdict on what's possible for us this season. But we need to win a couple more games before that.

DFB.de: Immediately after the game in Bremen, the entire team gathered on the pitch and formed a circle. Was this gathering a symbol of the new feeling of unity at Schalke?

Geis: It showed that we are a real team and that we bonded during pre-season. The new players have settled in perfectly and everything is going well. No matter if we lose or win, we will come together.

DFB.de: What part has the new coach played in Schalke's solid start to the new campaign?

Geis: He's been doing a fantastic job and has prepared us extremely well for this new season - not only from a tactical viewpoint, but also as people. The more we come together, the stronger we are individually on the pitch. That was also a key aspect of our pre-season preparation.

DFB.de: Is Schalke's good form a result of good pre-season preparations?

Geis: Certainly. We've worked really well so far this week and wanted to follow up our 5-0 victory in the DFB Cup in Duisburg with a solid performance in the Bundesliga. We accomplished that and also managed to please the fans that made the trip to Bremen. They all saw that we are fully committed.

DFB.de: You personally appear to have made great improvements as well, since joining Schalke from Mainz.

Geis: I was pleased with my performance today, as it was my first Bundesliga game for Schalke. However, I won’t get carried away and I’ll try to focus on one game after the other. Obviously I want to show everyone here what I'm capable of and continue to improve. Schalke is a world-class club and I want to repay the trust they've placed in me.
