Schalke team now in Blindenfussball-Bundesliga

FC Schalke 04 will have their own team in the Blindenfußball-Bundesliga for the first time on Saturday. The league, which is funded by the DFB Sepp Herberger Foundation, is entering its eighth season. The Royal Blues play their first two games on Saturday and will face PSV Köln (11:00 CEST) and BFW Würzburg (15:00 CEST).

"FC Schalke 04 is aware of its social responsibilities and gladly get involved. The new blind football department is one of the projects in our “Schalke hilft!” (“Schalke helps!”) foundation and will be permanently connected to our club. As an integral part of Schalke, we can guarantee continued support for the scheme," said Peter Peters, Chief Financial Officer.

Playing for Schalke: "A dream come true"

For three years, the club has been supporting the VfB Gelsenkirchen blind footballers, who finished fourth out of eight teams last season. The takeover of the department has now been agreed. "It’s a dream come true. I was born and live in Gelsenkirchen. It’s a real honour to wear the jersey," commented captain Bayram Dogan.

The matchdays are very popular and take place in different cities. Games are played on 20x40 metre pitches. The season starts in Landshut in June and will finish in Freiburg in the middle of September. There will be a break in the season from the 21st – 29th August when the European Championship will take place in Hereford, England. Schalke captain and Germany international Bayram Dogan could be involved in the tournament.
