Schalke stroll to comfortable win against SV Sandhausen

FC Schalke 04 claimed a routine 4-1 victory away to SV Sandhausen in the DFB Cup round of 16 to qualify for the quarter final stage. Head coach Markus Weinzierl fielded a full-strength team for the game, with World Champion Benedikt Höwedes and fellow Germany international Leon Goretzka both starting. The win sees them reach the DFB Cup quarter finals for the first time since 2011, when they won the competition.

Three Schalke goals in seven minutes

Schalke were dominant on the ball, holding 86% of the possession in the first 15 minutes, but struggled to find a way through for most of the first half. They found the breakthrough not long before half time thanks to a goal from Alessandro Schöpf. Between his 38th minute strike and the half time whistle they scored twice more. Daniel Caligiuri scored his first goal for the club since signing in the winter transfer window from fellow Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg minutes later, and on the stroke of half time Naldo scored his second goal in as many games.

The second half was calmer, with Schalke holding control over proceedings and not looking to overexert themselves. The home side grabbed a goal back in the 64th minute through Andrew Wooten, but Yevhen Konoplyanka poked the ball in a few minutes later to see reassert Schalke's cushion.
