Schalke manager Breitenreiter gives Sam a "second chance"

Germany international Sidney Sam will get a second chance with Schalke 04. The 27-year-old midfielder, along with Kevin-Prince Boateng, was suspended by his club two weeks before the end of last season. After a long conversation with the new Schalke coach André Breitenreiter, Sam has been pardoned and granted a second chance.

"He will join up with us on Thursday," said Breitenreiter in an interview with club site schalke04.de on Wednesday. "I spoke with him at length last week. We had a long and deep discussion, and he came across as really understanding and humble. Sidney wants to make right what he did wrong in the past and he asked me for a second chance."

Breitenreiter reported that after this conversation he went straight to club sporting director Horst Heldt to discuss the matter, and that he also asked for the opinion of the rest of the Schalke squad. Finally, the decision was made in favour of the ex-Leverkusen player. "At the end of it all, we decided that we want to afford him another chance. We’ve all made mistakes at some point in our lives," continued Breitenreiter. "Horst Heldt has given his blessing too and that’s that – Sidney will return to training on Thursday." The Schalke boss hopes that Sam will also "back up his words with actions on the pitch."
