Schalke held in six-goal thriller as new-boys shine

Schalke 04 and Hamburg shared the points in a 3-3 thriller on Sunday as new-signings grabbed the limelight on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season. Schalke's new-signing Adam Szalai scored the Royal Blues' crucial third goal to share the points with Hamburg.

New-signing Shinji Okazaki of Japan netted in Mainz 05's 3-2 home win over his ex-club VfB Stuttgart on Sunday in the Bundesliga - having only left them last month.

With a 6-1 victory against Europa League participants Eintracht Frankfurt Hertha BSC Berlin celebrated a glorious return to the Bundesliga after their one-year absence and took over the lead after Round 1. Borussia Dortmund was only one goal short of Hertha with their 4-0 opening at FC Augsburg, including three goals by newly signed Gabun striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Bayer Leverkusen (3-1 against Freiburg) and Hannover 96 (2-0 against Wolfsburg) had a winning start as well, while 1899 Hoffenheim gave away a two-goal lead in their 2-2 at home against Nürnberg. Eintracht Braunschwei lost their first Bundesliga match after a hiatus of 28 years 0-1 to Werder Bremen.

Defending Bundesliga titleholders Bayern München won the opening match of the 51th Bundesliga campaign 3:1 (2:1) against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. Arjen Robben scored this campaigns first goal (12.), just four minutes later Mario Mandzukic added another one. Five minutes from half-time Bayern-defender Dante scored an owngoal. David Alaba put his name one the score sheet by converting a penalty shot in the 69th minute.
