Schalke beaten 2-0 in Amsterdam

Schalke 04 had the woodwork and goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann to thank after only losing 2-0 in their Europa League Quarterfinal first leg tie against Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday evening. A series of sensational stops from the Royal Blues’ number one kept the deficit down ahead of next week’s return leg in Gelsenkirchen. Davy Klaassen got both goals for the Dutch side on the night, while Davison Sanchez and Donny van de Beek were denied by the woodwork in each half.

Alessandro Schöpf brought down Amin Younes inside the area midway through the first half, allowing Klaassen to open the scoring from the spot, before the the Ajax captain doubled the lead just before the hour mark, firing in from a right-wing cross into the box.

In the other ties, Celta Vigo defeated KRC Genk 3-1, while Manchester United drew 1-1 away to Anderlecht - with former Dortmund player Henrikh Mkhitaryan getting the away goal for Jose Mourinho’s side. The game between Lyon and Besiktas was delayed by 45 minutes after crowd trouble in France. The Turkish side led 1-0 at the break thanks to Ryan Babel’s goal.
