Schäfer loses Gold Cup final with Jamaica

Former Bundesliga and current Jamaica coach Winfried Schäfer has lost the Gold Cup final 3-1 against Mexico in Philadelphia.

In front of a crowd of 68,930, Mexico’s captain Andres Guardado opened the scoring with his tenth Gold Cup goal, before Jesus Corona and Oribe Peralta secured a seventh CONCACAF title for ‘El Tri’. Darren Mattocks scored a late consolation for the ‘Reggae Boyz’, who sensationally knocked out defending champions USA in the semi-final. The USA are currently managed by former Germany manager Jürgen Klinsmann.

Schäfer: "I am very proud of this team"

“For me this second place isn’t work a silver medal, for me it’s worth gold. Jamaica should be very proud of this team. I am at least,” said Schäfer after Jamaica’s best performance in the history of the tournament - in 1993 the Caribbean nation achieved third place. Schäfer himself missed out on a second continental title with defeat in the final, after the 65-year-old previously won the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2002.

As well as securing the title, winning the tournament also means Mexico will now have a chance to take part in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. The Central Americans will now face archrivals USA, who won the 2013 Gold Cup, in a playoff on 9th October in Pasadena, California to decide the CONCACAF representative.
