Sasic: "UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe Award is no small feat"

Sasic: It’s a special moment for me in my career. UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe award – it’s no small feat. It was a huge honour yesterday in Monaco

DFB.de: A few weeks have passed since the World Cup, since your last game. Have you got used to your new life yet?

Sasic: You have to adjust first, find a new rhythm and then get used to it. I think it will really sink in when the Bundesliga season starts again and the girls are playing every weekend – and I’m only watching. At the moment I’m feeling good though, everything is going very well.

DFB.de: You extended your stay in Monaco by another half day...

Sasic: Yeah, I’m enjoying it. We told ourselves, the sun is shining, let’s relax on Friday and delay the flight back. These are spontaneous decisions that I couldn’t make before. Now I am able to be a lot more flexible with my time, which I’m very much looking forward to.

DFB.de: What do you have planned for the coming weeks and months?

Sasic: In the foreseeable future I want to concentrate on my studies and get my degree. That’s my main goal.

Célia Sasic was presented with the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe award on Thursday. The former Germany international, who retired from football after the World Cup in Canada this summer, picked up the largest number of votes from journalists at UEFA in Monaco, beating her teammates Dzsenifer Marozsán (1. FFC Frankfurt) and French player Amandine Henry (Olympique Lyon) in the process. In an interview with DFB.de, the 27-year-old World Cup top goalscorer sat down with Paula Widmer and discussed the honour, her impressions of Monaco, and her plans for the future.

DFB.de: Congratulations Célia Sasic! How do you feel about winning the award?

Célia Sasic: I was very happy to receive the award. To get something like this as the end of your career is special.

DFB.de: Were you confident?

Sasic: You can’t be sure of anything, because ultimately I had no influence in the decision. For that season, I’m very pleased to have been chosen.

DFB.de: You are currently a Champions League winner, the top goalscorer of the Allianz women’s Bundesliga, Canada World Cup Golden Boot holder, and now you’ve won the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe award. It’s difficult to keep track of everything…

Sasic: (laughs) I can just about manage
