Sasic and Marozsan up for European Player of the Year award

Celia Sasic and Dzsenifer Marozsan from Champions League winner’s 1. FFC Frankfurt, as well as France international Amadine Henry from Olympique Lyon have all been nominated for the 2015 Best Women’s Footballer of the Year award, following a UEFA announcement on Wednesday. The three players, all of whom took part in this summer’s World Cup, received the most votes in the in the preliminary voting round and will now be put forward for the final round of voting.

Journalists from all 54 UEFA member associations will vote for Europe’ best female footballer in Monaco on the 27th August. The rest of the rankings have already been confirmed, with three other Germany’s in the top ten: Anja Mittag (recently switched from Rosenberg to Paris Saint-Germain) came fourth, World Goalkeeper of the Year Nadine Angerer (Portland Thorns) and Simone Laudehr (1. FFC Frankfurt) were joint tenth. VfB Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp was voted the twelfth best player in Europe.

The award is entering its third year of existence and so far the title has remained in Germany: Nadine Angerer won the accolade in 2013, whilst Nadine Keßler was voted in 2014.

Messi, Ronaldo and Suárez the top three male players

Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) und Luis Suárez (also FC Barcelona) are the three candidates for Europe’s Best Footballer of the Year 2015 award. The current holder of the title, which was introduced in 2011, is World Footballer of the Year Ronaldo (30), whose only titles in the 2014/15 season were the relatively unimportant UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Messi (28), meanwhile, won the treble with the Catalan club last season, before celebrating Super Cup success on Tuesday (5-4 a.e.t. against FC Sevilla), to take his trophy haul to 25 during his stellar FC Barcelona career.
