Sasic and Marozsán decide top game for Frankfurt

1. FFC Frankfurt won Sunday’s top game against Turbine Potsdam courtesy of strong performances by Germany internationals Celia Sasic and Dzsenifer Marozsán. The 5-1 win enabled them to close the gap to the top of the table while Potsdam lose ground. VfL Wolfsburg continue to top the table after a convincing 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in their opening game of the second half of the season. Bayern München remain just behind them after winning 2-1 in Hoffenheim. MSV Duisburg failed to collect the points they desperately need to avoid relegation and drew 2-2 in Freiburg. SGS Essen and SC Sand also split points in a 2-2 draw.

Frankfurt looked confident from the off. After five minutes, Sasic stepped up to convert a penalty. Marozsán put her name on the scoresheet 21 minutes in. Sasic added another shortly after and completed her hat-trick minutes after the break. Inka Wesley’s consolation goal for Turbine came too late anyway, but Mandy Islacker underlined Frankfurt’s ambitions with an injury-time strike, increasing the tally to five. Kick off was delayed by an hour due to pitch conditions.

Wolves stay on top

Wolfsburg never looked to give away the three points in their home fixture against Bayer Leverkusen. The title defenders impressed with a strong performance. Martina Müller scored either side of the break; the Germany internationals Lena Goeßling and Alexandra Popp and Japan’s Yuki Ogimi added to the tally with their second-half goals. VfL now sit at the top of the table with 38 points.

However, Bayern are on Wolfsburg’s heels, sitting only two points behind. A second-half goal by Eunice Beckmann sealed the 2-1 victory. First-half goals by München’s Katherine Stengel and Hoffenheim’s Stephanie Breitner meant the match remained a narrow affair for a long time.

Sand and Duisburg fail to cling surprise wins

SC Sand came close to collecting three points in Essen. Under-19 international Lea Schüller gave the hosts an early lead, but Julia Zirnstein and Christine Veth turned the game before the break. However, an 83rd-minute strike by Vanessa Martini secured SGS Essen one point.

Earlier, MSV Duisburg failed to clinch their second victory of the season. Czech Republic international Lucie Vonkova and Stefanie Weichelt scored to turn the game after Freiburg’s Sandra Starke had put her side ahead in the opening stages. However, a late equaliser by the American Chioma Igwe cost Duisburg two points.
