Sané scores for City in eight-goal thriller; Atlético too strong for Leverkusen

Pep Guardiola and Germany international Leroy Sané have one foot in the Champions League quarterfinals with Manchester City after a thrilling victory over French Ligue 1 challengers AS Monaco. The English side came from behind twice in the 5-3 win against the 2004 finalists, putting them in pole position to reach the next round.

Raheem Sterling gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half following a wonderful Sané assist, but a quick-fire double from Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe turned the tie in favour of the French going into the break. Falcao saw his penalty saved by Willy Caballero shortly after the restart, before Sergio Agüero then levelled for City in the 58th minute. The Colombian redeemed himself shortly afterwards, when he restored Monaco’s lead with a stunning chip. However, Guardiola’s side kept their cool and made it 3-3 when Agüero met David Silva’s corner with a cool volleyed finish. John Stones completed the comeback in the 77th and Sané wrapped up the scoring in the 82nd to give City a big advantage ahead of the return leg in Monaco.

Leverkusen face uphill task in Madrid

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first Champions League defeat of the season on Tuesday evening and left themselves with a mountain to climb if they want to reach the quarter finals. The Werkself were beaten 4-2 at home by last year’s finalists Atlético Madrid.

Saul Niguez put the Spaniards in front with a curling effort past a helpless Bernd Leno from the edge of the box in the 17th minute. Superstar striker Antoine Griezmann increased the lead to two in the 25th with another quick counter. It was the Frenchman’s fourth goal of the season in the competition. Karim Bellarabi gave Leverkusen hope when he pulled one back shortly after the restart, but Kevin Gameiro re-established the two-goal cushion from the penalty spot ten minutes later. A Stefan Savic own goal gave the German side hope once more, before Fernando Torres snatched a fourth shortly before full time.
