Sané saves S04 draw, wins for Dortmund and Augsburg

After two comfortable wins to open their Europa League campaign, Schalke 04 were held to a 2-2 draw by Sparta Prague on Thursday evening. The Gelsenkirchen club still sit top of Group K though and remain on course to qualify for the knockout stages.

Franco Di Santo put the Bundesliga’s third-placed side into a sixth-minute lead with his fourth Europa League goal of the season, but strikes from Kehinde Fatai and David Lafata had Sparta in front with less than 30 minutes left to play. However, substitute and Germany U21 international Leroy Sané netted in the 73rd minute to secure a point for the Royal Blues. The two sides will meet again in Prague on 5th November.

Aubameyang keeps on scoring

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang produced a match-winning performance to earn Borussia Dortmund an important three points in their Europa League campaign. The Gabon international bagged a hat-trick as BVB won 3-1 in Azerbaijan against FK Gabala. Borussia continue to lead Group C and look a shoe-in to reach the round of 32.

Aubameyang scored in the 31st, 38th and 72nd minute to make it six goals in the competition. BVB now have seven points to their name and remain unbeaten at the halfway stage. It could have been an even bigger win for the Bundesliga’s second-placed team, but captain Dodo netted a consolation goal in injury time.

FCA off the mark

Augsburg have finally got their Europa League campaign up and running after a hard-fought win against AZ Alkmaar. Markus Weinzierl’s side beat the two-time Dutch champions 1-0 courtesy of a goal from former Germany international Piotr Trochowski, earning them their first ever points on the European stage. The win will also give the Bavarian side a boost in the Bundesliga, as the current last-placed side prepare to face Dortmund on Sunday.

On his full debut for FCA, Trochowski scored a delightful free kick to make it 1-0, giving the 1000 travelling fans plenty to cheer about. For Augsburg, who are currently bottom of the Bundesliga, it was a result that ended a run of five games without a win.
