Sané goal not enough as Man City go out, Leverkusen also exit Champions League

English side Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Monaco, despite a goal from Germany international Leroy Sané. The citizens lost 3-1 in Monaco meaning the tie finished 6-6 on aggregate and the French side went through on away goals. Former Bayern Munich head coach Pep Guardiola lost in his 100th European game as a manager as his side’s slow start gave them an uphill struggle in France.

Bayer Leverkusen also went out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, despite earning a respectable 0-0 draw against Athletico Madrid in Spain. Germany internationals Karim Bellarabi, Julian Brandt, Bernd Leno and Kevin Volland all featured for Leverkusen who, having lost the first leg 4-2 in Germany, played much better in Madrid and had chances to win on the night.

Sané stands out

City fell behind to Kylian Mbappé’s strike in the ninth minute and went 2-0 down after half an hour when Fabinho found the back of the net with a clean strike. However, Guardiola’s half-time team talk seemed to have worked as City created numerous chances in the second period. Sergio Aguero spurned a number of opportunities before Sané rifled a shot into the roof of an empty net to put the English club in the ascendency. It wasn’t to be for Sané and City, however, as Tiemoué Bakayoko’s header in the 77th minute put Monaco ahead on away goals and they held this lead until the end.

Volland misses big chance early on, Germany keeper Leno shines

Leverkusen went into the game in Madrid facing an uphill battle, but they started brightly and Kevin Volland missed a big chance to give the German side a crucial early lead in the fourth minute. After a quarter of an hour, Angel Correa missed an equally good opportunity at the other end. Just before half-time, Javier Hernandez could have given Bayer the lead, but he couldn’t convert after good work from Germany international Julian Brandt.

Shortly before half-time, the masked German goalkeeper Bernd Leno stopped shots from Correa and Koke to keep Leverkusen’s hopes alive. After the break, Bayer continued to go in search of the opener but were unable to get past a renowned, resolute and stubborn Athletico defence. The Spanish side are now unbeaten in eight European home games against German opposition, a run which stretches back to the 1996/97 season when they were beaten 1-0 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium by Borussia Dortmund.
