Sané fires Schalke to victory

VfB are still to pick up a point this season. They have lost each of their opening five Bundesliga games. Alexander Zorniger’s men were beaten 1-0 by FC Schalke 04 earlier today; Leroy Sané grabbed the winner. Stuttgart created lots of chances but a majestic performance from Ralf Fährmann kept them at bay.

Lots of input but little output for Stuttgart

The hosts were continually knocking on the door throughout the entire first 45 minutes but failed to grab that elusive first goal. VfB dominated the early exchanges but Germany youth internationals Timo Werner (17’) and Timo Baumgartl (18’) failed to convert early chances. As the half progressed, further opportunities fell to Daniel Ginczek (27’/35’), Alexandru Maxim (29’) and Filip Kostic (37’) but the trio also failed to hit the back of the net. Schalke only had one real foray forward before the break but Przemysław Tytoń kept out Joel Matip’s 20th minute effort.

Stuttgart were made to rue these missed opportunities early in the second half. Max Meyer’s tidy pass found Leroy Sané, who beat his man before clinically firing home (53’). The goal knocked the wind out of the hosts’ sails and they rarely troubled after the game and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting could have doubled the lead with 17 to play. The final 15 minutes saw VfB try to force the issue but Ginczek (75’), Florian Klein (81’) and Martin Harnik (83’) were all wasteful in front of goal.
