Sand and Wolfsburg progress

The DFB Women’s Cup semi-finals took place on Sunday afternoon, with both SC Sand and VfL Wolfsburg progressing to the final, which will take place in Cologne in May. The beaten outfits were FC Bayern, who currently top the Allianz-Frauen Bundesliga, and SC Freiburg respectively.

Sand’s victory over Bayern saw them reach the final for the first time in their history. The game also saw the Munich-based side lose their first competitive game of the season. “Sand put up a good fight and were rewarded for their efforts,” explained Bayern boss Thomas Wörle after the final whistle. Netherlands star Vivianne Miedema (35’) put Bayern in front before the break but goals from Jovana Damnjanovic (61’) and Anne van Bonn (82’) turned the game on its head late on.

The day’s other tie saw defending champions VfL Wolfsburg qualify for the showpiece event. They beat Freiburg 2-1 in front of their own fans at the AOK-Stadion. Germany stars Alexandra Popp (5’) and Babett Peter (78’) gave the Wolves a two-goal advantage and even though U17 star Giulia Gwinn scored for the visitors in the final minute of normal time, VfL held on.
